Stripped I by Thiur

A project I had on my mind since quite some time and today I finally got round to try it... :-)

Photograph of an exploding water ballon, shot in dark room with flash in approximately 45° angle below balloon.

Suggester Says: The execution is absolutely fantastic here. I really like the timing and how you can see a face, almost, thus making it more abstract. It's amazing how this is water from a popped balloon.

I came across this piece when it was first submitted, I think I was searching for low exposure photographs; when I came around this.

Unlike many other thousands of low exposure, balloon popping experiments, this one is a bit more unique in its vision and impact.

To start off, it looks like a face! :D and each of these artworks looks like something: Orange one looks like a snowman, green one looks like a man with headphones. Kudos to you for that man!

Secondly, the yellow color is one that keeps the attention of the user to where it is required.

Perfect timing, patience and your readiness to get wet are all part of this which we must admire! :)

You are a very brave man! Placing your camera UNDER THE BALLOON. You must have had to clean your lenses a good many times to get this shot!

Oh man, the balloon itself was so fluid I thought it was paint at first. What a beautiful shot! I really like the twisting motion you achieved in the orange one, as well.

what kind of rig were you using to get this done?
i'm thinking about purchasing one of those infrared lasers where whenever something breaks the connection between the laser and the receiver it causes the flashes to go off. you can set the control box to have a delay too. it's really neat.

I fixed a switch to the flash and then manually tried to coordinate the flash with the explosion. Such an infrared light barrier would be great and probably would have saved a lot of unsuccessful photos... ;)

Here's the link to the equipment; [link]

The STOP SHOT would be what you'd want, but they also make great macro rails. It's $350 for the "Stop Shot Module Deluxe Package", which is probably what you'd need.

Great concept...I've only ever seen this done with high speed cameras! It's nice to see still shots. I like how the shape of the balloon is still evident with the water. Well done! :D

Danke! Der Blitz wurde manuell ausgelöst (Schalter an Kontakte gelötet), d.h. war Glücksache, ob ich den richtigen Zeitpunkt erwischte... ;-)

Very clever. Great shot! Glad you got around to doing this. How did you break the balloons? I would have guessed that this would have required a very short exposure, but it looks like you used a rather long shutter speed. Fav.

:iconthiur:
Thiur Featured By Owner Mar 16, 2011  Hobbyist Photographer
Thanks! :) The shutter speed is slightly misleading as it was shot in a dark room using a flash, so actually the shot does have a very short exposure time, as you guessed correctly!

That is amazing! Until I read your description I wasn't sure what I was looking at. It seems like a face made of water and yellow object framing it, almost like a drop of yellow paint. Absolutely gorgeous capture!
